BCS Kansas Discusses Job Hunting In The Fourth Quarter

Leawood, Kansas - November, 14, 2018

BCS Overland Park/Leawood, KS says that being in the right place at the right time is often why some people get hired over others, even though they may not be as qualified.  The fourth quarter is a good time to start the search because most job seekers will sit out with the perception that hiring slows down at this time.  While this is true, less competition in the market benefits those who don’t attempt to time the hiring seasons.  Also, with first quarter being the busiest for hiring, getting a head start helps to get the pipeline filled up and speeds up the hiring process.  While hiring can happen at any time, the first three months of the year tend to be the most active, so the best time to start the process is in the fourth quarter.  There are three strategies that can be implemented to speed up the hiring process.

First, do research on the industries to be targeted to get a better understanding of the hiring cycles/seasons.  Second, accelerate networking during slower periods when others are “on the sideline”.  Finally, tap into social media including LinkedIn for information on hiring patterns and as a resource to contact someone directly who works for the company.

BCS Overland Park/Leawood, KS Says That With The Unemployment Rate  At Historical Lows

LEAWOOD, Kan. - July 12, 2018 - PRLog

BCS Overland Park/Leawood, KS says that with the unemployment rate at  historical lows, employers are looking to fill millions of jobs.  For that reason, job hunting is better than it's been in nearly a decade.  The demand is particularly strong for service industry jobs and health care with American employers looking to fill 6.6 million jobs across all sectors.  With the unemployment rate so low nationwide, higher levels of job openings suggests that good companies are having a harder time finding skilled workers.  Small businesses are particularly aggressive in hiring, with about half of the open jobs being posted by companies with fewer than 500 employees.  In a survey posted by the National Federation of Independent Businesses, small businesses reported that the shortage of qualified workers was a major issue affecting their operations in the second quarter.  Moody's Analytics anticipates that because it is an employee's job market, workers can anticipate getting a bump in compensation when they switch jobs.

BCS Discusses How To Negotiate For A Salary

 LEAWOOD, Kan. - June 4, 2018

BCS Overland Park/Leawood, KS says that when negotiating an offer there are several key items to keep in mind.  First, it's never a good idea to bring up money in the discussion until the employer asks or introduces it into the conversation.  Generally, the company will ask the candidate what their current salary is or what type of salary he/she is looking for.  The best response is to let the company know that he/she is interested in the position and politely ask for "a range " associated with the job.  Once the range is given, it's ok to repeat the high end of the range back and ask what the next steps are in the process.  This allows the job seeker to establish the compensation range without disclosing their current/past compensation.  Also, it demonstrates an ability to negotiate which can translate to the company and ultimately  impact the bottom line.  It's extremely important to "know your number" prior to negotiating any type of compensation – this also includes benefits such as insurance, vacation, 401k, stock options, car/car allowance and severance package.

BCS Discusses Resumes For Career Transition

It is important to keep in mind that the purpose of the resume is to generate interest

LEAWOOD, Kan. - April 2, 2018

BCS Overland Park/Leawood says that job seekers looking to transition into new industries must keep a couple things in mind when preparing a resume.  First, the resume should be no more than two pages and include a profile, transferable skill sets and achievements on page one.  Executives spend on average only 15 – 25 seconds reviewing the first page of the resume to determine if this is a viable candidate.  The second page gives a work history, dates, training and education without indicating the dates graduated.  The resume should be very clear how the skills and accomplishments will transfer to the new industry being pursued.  It is important to keep in mind that the purpose of the resume is to generate interest which leads to the interview.  Current industries and dates are shifted to the second page to prevent the employers from pigeonholing the candidate – keeping in mind that the first page is the "hook".

January And February Is The Best Time To Look For Long-term, Full-time Career Positions

The Overland Park Career Advisors actually consider these the top two months for hiring based off of local hiring statistics.

LEAWOOD, Kan. - Jan. 5, 2018

BCS Overland Park/Leawood says that January and February is the best time of the year to look  for long-term, full-time career positions. These are the months most companies receive updated budgets and sales forecasts. Also, executives have a better idea of what they need and whether they can afford to hire new team members. The Overland Park Career Advisors actually consider these the top two months for hiring based off of local hiring statistics.

Keep in mind that January can start slow for some companies. Employees returning from holiday vacations take a few weeks to re-organize their workflow. Also, it is best to wait until the middle or latter part of January to send your resume. The biggest upside to first of the year is that the company has plenty of money, time and resources to choose the right candidate.

There Are Several Mistakes That Job Searchers Make When Conducting A Campaign

If someone is unemployed, they should be spending at least 35 hours a week on the search.

LEAWOOD, Kan. - Nov. 28, 2017

BCS Overland Park/Leawood says there are several mistakes that job searchers make when conducting a campaign.  The first is not spending enough time on the search.  If someone is unemployed, they should be spending at least 35 hours a week on the search.  An employed person should spend between seven and 15 hours per week to get some momentum.  Secondly, there should be between six to 10 things in the works at all times.  Opportunities will fall through and when they do they will need to be replaced with other potential opportunities.  This keeps the law of averages in the job seekers favor.  Finally, most candidates target people at the wrong level.  The rule of thumb is to talk with people who are one to two levels above the job they are looking for.  It is easier to work the resume down to the right person vs. working the resume up.

BCS Discusses Using Pain Letters In A Job Search

The rules have changed for any job seeker who is looking for a new opportunity.

LEAWOOD, Kan. - Oct. 19, 2017
Any job seeker who is looking for a new opportunity realizes that the rules have changed.  An applicant can send over 100 resumes using the employers own career portals and never hear a word back in reply.  This can be insulting and demoralizing but there is a better way to conduct a campaign.  Using some work and research, someone can find the specific person they will be working for in the new position.

A well prepared letter (Pain Letter) can be sent directly to the decision maker's desk (8.5 x 11 inch in an envelope).  The three parts of the pain letter are the "hook" – something complimentary about the company.  Next is the  "pain hypothesis" – identifying a need the company currently has, and finally the "close" – a story about a time the job seeker solved a similar kind of pain before.

The letter should be short and followed up with an email and phone call – an aggressive campaign  can include three to four letters every day.

BCS Discusses Targeted Marketing In A Job Search

Proper research on companies will help to home in on the right industries, companies and the right kinds of positions.
Leawood, United States, September 20,2017

BCS Overland Park / Leawood says that an effective job search is really a research process. Instead of blindly sending resumes to companies that may or may not be an ideal fit, proper research on companies will help to home in on the right industries, companies and the right kinds of positions. This will increase the odds of landing a position quicker but more importantly pick the right job – the one that will be the best fit for the long term. Effective research will develop into a Personal Marketing Plan which will be targeted to specific companies and decision makers.

This approach will serve as a guide for the search and will make the whole process less stressful and more efficient. Also, a more organized approach condenses time and generally results in multiple offers which creates leverage in the negotiations resulting in a higher compensation package.

BCS Overland Park Discusses Job Hunting Mistakes

BCS Overland Park/Leawood Kansas says that many job seekers fail to realize that over 80% of opportunities are not found through traditional resources such as the internet job boards.

 LEAWOOD, Kan. - July 8, 2016 -

PRLog -- BCS Overland Park/Leawood Kansas says that many job seekers fail to realize that over 80% of opportunities are not found through traditional resources such as the internet job boards.  Statistics show that online resumes produce only one inquiry for every 85 resumes a company receives and less than half of the inquires result in an interview.  Therefore, only one interview takes place for every 170 resumes with the average company conducting 10 interviews before extending an offer.
That means one offer is extended for every 1,700 resumes that are submitted through online postings.

The more effective approach is to utilize "target marketing" by identifying transferable /marketable skill sets, qualifying desirable companies to work for and utilizing networking techniques to ensure marketing collateral such as resumes and cover letters end up in the hands of the actual decision makers. BCS says that in the first quarter of 2016, approximately 40% of client offers were created positions utilizing the "target marketing" method from the Overland Park office.

Job hunters fail to follow up on networking meetings

PRESS RELEASE  OCT 20, 2015

(Newswire.com) - BCS Overland Park says that the majority of job hunters fail to follow up on networking meetings.  After a meeting with a networking contact, job seekers should keep in touch with that person by informing them of progress made in their  search as well as sending information or articles that would be of interest.

Networking is a two way street and should benefit both parties, especially in a career campaign.  Follow ups are also important after a job interview - the rule of thumb is to be persistent but not a pest.

BCS Overland Park/Leawood Kansas Discusses Applicant Tracking Systems

BCS/Overland Park Kansas says that on average an employer will receive over 200 resumes from an advertised posting on a job board.

 LEAWOOD, Kan. - Oct. 4, 2016 -

PRLog -- BCS/Overland Park Kansas says that on average an employer will receive over 200 resumes from an advertised posting on a job board.  Recruiters and Human Resources will then utilize the applicant tracking system (ATS) to disqualify one half of the applicants.  Further requirements narrow the search down by another 80 which leaves around 20 resumes to review.  Those 20 applicants are skimmed to trim down to around three to six candidates to call in for interviews.

More effective ways to generate meaningful interviews are targeting desirable employers, using the direct contact method and effectively networking to bypass the screening process to get directly in front of decision makers.
